The Nervous System: The Bridge Between Flesh and Spirit

Introduction

In this blog post I am going to be talking about spirituality, not from the new age spiritual or esoteric point of view but from a biological and physiological perspective, I will be discussing the concept of the spirit not as something that happens “above” the human body but within it. I will be exploring how the human spirit experiences, interprets, and expresses itself through the nervous system. This blog post is an attempt to explore the meeting point between biology, emotions, consciousness, and spirit. Stayed tuned.

But before we begin rambling about this and that let's first establish the basic foundation of this exploration.

What is Spirit?

Spirit can simply be defined as the part of a person that consists of their mind, emotions or feelings and character as opposed to their physical body. In other words the spirit is the 4th dimensional part of the human organism as opposed to the 3rd dimensional parts that can be seen with the physical eyes.

If a human being was a machine, the spirit would be the software and the body would be the hardware. Essentially a person's spirit is their inner state of being, which basically is like a library that holds all the thoughts and emotions that make a person who they are.

Therefore, one can say that you get a taste of who a person is when you interact with their spirit, as one would taste a meal. In this case how you feel when you are around a person or when you think about them.

Naturally this will require a bit of emotional inteligence as well self-awareness on your part, this allows you to be able to discern which emotions are yours and which is being projected unto your spirit from external factors.

What is the Nervous System?

There nervous system is a system of all the nerves that can be found in the body of a living organism. Man in this case. The nervous system is closely associated with the respiratory, digestive and circulatory system, which are responsible for breathing and circulation of blood and nutrients across the entire human body.

What is a nerve?

A nerve is a long thread like tissue found within the body that carries messages from the brain to all the parts of the body and vice versa. The nerves allow the body to move your limbs and feel various emotional states.

This means that nervous system essentially houses the spirit, where the brain picks up on nerve signals that tells it that a thing is hot or cold, feels pleasant or not, and so on. These signals aid communication between body parts and regulation of various emotional states within the body.

This process is not merely mechanical; it shapes perception, mood, awareness, and emotional capacity. See, the whole system determines how we feel, how we react, and how much of reality we can safely experience.

See how the whole thing comes back full circle to the definition of spirit from the start of this post. The nervous system (a faculty) that enables the brain (mind/thought) to interact with the body (emotion/feeling). The spirit in this case is the simply the human experience as observed by the nervous system.

Now that we have established a bit of foundation as to what spirit and the nervous system are, lets venture deeper into the metaphysical roles that the faculty of the nervous system plays.

Emotion: The Language of Both Body and Spirit

Emotions are energetic signals (literal electrical signals) send from the brain that pass through the nervous system. However, they belong to consciousness at a deeper level. In a previous blog post we discussed about the nature of consciousness and how the universe is mental. There we talked about how consiousness is energy being aware of itself and therefore energy in motion (e-motion) is the most direct medium to interact with consciousness.

Emotions are not “weaknesses” or “random storms” but communication systems between self, psyche, and spirit. The absence of emotional awareness leads many to think that they are simply along for the ride, subjected to whatever emotions that plague them during the day.

This is far from the truth, while a person in this state is indeed caught up in an emotional hamster wheel, there is always an easy option should one choose to get off. All that is required is that you understand a very simple principle which operates the whole thing.

alt
“Thoughts create emotions - Emotions generate more thoughts which then keeps the cycle going.”

Think of something from your past, Do it right now... something that made you feel bad. You will find that all the bad feelings start flooding in with the very thought and should you replace that with another, perhaps think of a funny video that always makes you laugh. There you go again, positive feelings start to flow and displace the ones from the bad thought.

That is how easy it is to get out of the funk. Create a healthy distraction, building self-awareness will also go a long way as it helps you notice these negative thoughts, see they tend to sneak up on you but with practice your sense will start to pick up on these emotional signals and redirect them towards re-enforcing positivity with this easy exercise.

There are many resources that tells you how to regulate your thoughts and emotions but essentially they all point to one thing: Transmutation.

Most people avoid their emotions, both the good and the bad feeling ones. Nothing good ever comes out of running away from our feelings, they were meant to be felt, I for one had to learn this lesson the hard way. I hope to save you a lot of stress with this little pep talk.

The Nervous System as the Gateway of Spiritual Experience

Now we shall explore the idea that spiritual awareness, intuition, presence, peace, and inner clarity are heavily influenced by the state of the nervous system. When regulated, one experiences connection, clarity, stillness, and grounded spirituality. When dysregulated, spirituality feels chaotic, fearful, obsessive, or confusing.

Negative emotions, while they don't particularly feel great and not actually hurting you. You know that saying that goes along the lines of; If you think you got it bad think of someone who has it worse? Now I want you to compare your emotional discomfort with actual physical pain the next time you feel the dark cloud of emotion over you.

It is never a good idea to resist it, we hear this alot don't we. Feel don't resist but why? How does this "feel it" thing help?

Nothing happens within the human organism that isn't observed and registered by the subconscious mind, this is that part of the mind that is responsible for emotions (the conscious is responsible for thought). The subsconscious doesn't stop there, it also is responsible for replaying patterns on your behalf to into the etheric field that spreads across time-space through the 4th dimension and beyound.

We have all heard that thoughts create reality, if so think of thoughts as the bricks and emotions as the cement that keeps it all together. Negative thoughts will natural produce negative feelings in the body and vice versa. This will obviously stunt spiritual growth as these thoughts are precieved to be bad and will therefore foster resistance towards one's goal of spiritual growth as you keep repeating the same pattern on a loop.

When the Body Says No: Trauma, Fear, and Spiritual Disconnection

Naturally unresolved emotional pain, trauma, chronic stress, and anxiety interfere with spiritual (mental-emotional) clarity. This causes many people to misinterpret anxiety as intuition or fear as “signs” and when these things don't check out they loose faith and self-esteem sending deeper into the thought-feeling feedback loop from hell. Sometimes “spiritual blockages” are actually nervous system safety responses protecting the psyche.

Trauma from childhood still trying to protect an adult who doesn't need protection anymore, instead of helping these blockages get in the way.

Safety is not just physical; it is emotional and existential. Feeling safe allows the nervous system to open, relax, receive insight, dream, imagine, and connect with higher awareness. Peace is not only mystical; it is physiological. The feeling of safety, spiritual awakening and inner peace are simply a mental-emotional state of being, not some mystical experience happening outside your ability to comprehend.
